A Quizlet alternative that starts from your own material
Quizlet is the default because everyone knows it. But its free tier keeps shrinking, the shared decks are often wrong or outdated, and you still type every card yourself. Here is how Quizcard differs and when each is the better pick.
Where Quizcard is different
- Cards from your documents. Upload the lecture PDF, a Word doc of notes, or the slides, and get a topic-grouped deck in under a minute. Quizlet starts from a blank card.
- Diagrams on the cards. Charts, payoff graphs, and labelled figures are cropped from the PDF onto the card. Quizlet needs you to find and upload images one at a time.
- The source stays attached. A built-in reader with highlights and notes sits next to the deck, and a tutor answers questions from your own pages, not the open internet.
- No lock-in. Export any deck to CSV or JSON. Import from Quizlet via its export, too.
Where Quizlet is still ahead
- Study modes. Quizlet has matching games, Learn mode, and tests; Quizcard has flip cards by deck, folder, or topic.
- A much larger library of shared decks, with the caveat that quality is uneven.
- Classroom features for teachers, such as class sets and live games.
Pricing compared
Quizlet Plus is a paid subscription for an ad-free experience and advanced modes. Quizcard is free for unlimited manual decks and studying, with two generated documents included; Basic ($4.99/month) adds ten generated documents a month and Pro ($9.99/month) adds thirty with deeper page limits. There are no ads on any plan.
Switching from Quizlet
- In Quizlet, open the set and use Export with a tab separator between term and definition.
- In Quizcard, click Import cards, paste or upload the file, and map the columns. Topic and explanation columns are optional.
- From then on, upload the source document instead of retyping: the deck arrives already grouped by topic.
Questions
Can I import my Quizlet sets?
Yes. Export the set from Quizlet as text with a tab or comma separator, then use Import in Quizcard. Front and back map automatically.
Does Quizcard have Learn or Match modes?
Not today. Study mode is flip cards you can filter by topic and shuffle. Export to Anki if you want interval scheduling.
Is Quizcard really free?
Creating and studying your own cards is free with no limits and no ads. Generated decks beyond the first two documents are on paid plans.
